In Conversation: The Nakeds With David Austen and Anouchka Grose: De La Warr Pavillion (2015)

The Nakeds takes as its starting point a self-portrait by Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918). Working in Vienna, the birthplace of modern psychoanalysis, at the same time as Sigmund Freud during a turbulent era in European history, both Schiele and Freud challenged existing ideas of the naked body and sexuality.
Artist and the co-curator of exhibition, David Austen, and psychoanalyst Anouchka Grose will discuss this pivotal point in our understanding of the body exposed.
David Austen is a London based artist. He studied at Maidstone College (1978-81) and the Royal College of Art (1982-85). Austen was awarded the Stanley Picker Fellowship at Kingston University in 2008-09. Recent solo exhibitions include The Gorgon’s Dream, The Burns Monument, Ingleby Gallery and the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Edinburgh and at Rob Tufnell, London (2012); Papillon, Anthony Reynolds Gallery, London (2011); and End of Love, Modern Art Gallery Oxford, Oxford (2010).
Anouchka Grose is a psychoanalyst and writer working in London. She has been practising as a therapist for 10 years and is a member of the Centre for Freudian Analysis and Research where she regularly lectures. She has published novels and non fiction books as well as writing about art, psychoanalysis and current affairs. Her journalism has been published in numerous publications including The Guardian and The Independent. She is currently working on a collection of essays for Karnac Books’ as well as teaching at Camberwell School of Art.
